Long before I was comfortable speaking I learned to use art as a way to communicate with the world. The camera provided me with a way to share my story with others without having to find the right words to describe what I was thinking or feeling. Photography offered a buffer from the world and a safe way to express myself.
In 2013, I had the opportunity to submit some of my work for a juried gallery show whose theme was “Abandoned: people, places or things.” I decided to take a different approach and focus on the abandoned people and organized my first formal photoshoot with a group of local Indie film actors. It was a great experience and I learned a lot by doing it.
From there I continued to move forward with finding other stories I wanted to share and setup other photoshoots for that purpose. Projects like Hello, my name is… and Messages of Hope, were created as a way to give people the opportunity to share their stories and show that recovery is real. I have also developed a workshop called, “Capturing Your Story” designed to educate participants on expressing themselves and sharing their stories through art.
If you are interested in participating in either or both of these projects or would like to learn more about the “Capturing Your Story” workshop please feel free to reach out with any questions, comments, etc. and I would be happy to provide you with more information: recovery.artist2019@gmail.com
